Do we really have to expect a movie to end up happy? I mean… would there be a difference on how people would react if you end a movie with the girl and the boy ending up together… would it then really assure you that life on earth is full of happy endings?
Take for example the movie CITY OF ANGELS. When Maggie (Meg Ryan) dies towards the end of the movie… my girlfriends were like… oh, too bad that Nicolas Cage gave up his being an angel… what good is the sacrifice? Maybe I can answer that… The thing is… it doesn’t have to be that Maggie and Seth will end up together, live happily ever after… it is the fact that they were able to share the most important thing that matters in this movie… LOVE and FEELING IT. Oh and remember… Seth justified the death of Meg Ryan by saying that… "I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it. One.".See? What do you need happy endings for? Do you think you would ever know how much Set loves Maggie if Maggie were to stay alive? I doubt that.
BIG FISH. Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor) always shared his fairytale-like stories to his son William. And William always wonders if these stories are true… He was finding it hard to believe that his father had a giant for a friend… bought the whole town just to restore it… courted his mother in a very unusual but sweet kinda way… and when Edward Bloom is dying… his son slowly realizes that what his father told him were true stories… it is sad that his father dies in the end of the story… But you can’t deny the fact the profound sense of wonder this movie will bring you… You can actually feel that DEATH is not the end of things… and that a person may die but his story will live on because he has shared the experience with you…
SIMON BIRCH. This one is truly memorable because it is one of the favorites of my Ate Ayrin. She cried and cried about why does Joe’s mom (Ashley Judd) have to die and why does Simon have to choose between his life and the life of his friend Joe (Played by Joseph Mazzello) in a bus accident… I think that this movie shows a very good example of what friendship should be… about forgiveness… about taking more credit to your self like Simon who happens to be unusually small although he’s already 12 yrs old… And the fact that Joe grew up to be a good man and never forgets that his little friend Simon saved his life. It is bittersweet in a way… but you can’t really find a movie that really celebrates friendship more.
There other movies out there that waits to be seen. It is amazing that although happy endings in the movies are very much cherished by the majority… You can’t deny that the sad ones are the most compelling…
